Remedial massage is extremely effective as a preventative treatment |
Massage is defined in the dictionary as “a system of treatment for painful muscles by stroking, pressing, kneading and friction”. The word itself is possibly derived from the Greek word “massein” meaning “to knead”, the French word “masser” meaning “to shampoo” or the Arabic “mas’h” meaning “to press softly”. Whatever the origin, the treatment by massage is one of the earliest forms of medicine and was practised thousands of years ago in ancient Greece and Rome.
Pioneers of massage over the centuries include Hippocrates (the Father of Medicine), Galen (a Roman physician) and Professor Ling (a Swedish professor of the early nineteenth century). Professor Ling made a systematic study of massage and remedial exercise and established his school in Stockholm. The term “Swedish massage” is still in use today, thus honouring his work.
Initial consultations may take a little over an hour in order to establish the nature of the problem, an examination (including massage) and an explanation of a course of treatment needed.. The number of treatments will depend on the cause of discomfort, however, remedial massage is extremely effective as a preventative treatment therefore many people have regular massage throughout the year.
