'...The centre has a feel to it that I have never experienced anywhere else...' |
KINGSTON’S BEST KEPT SECRET!
Based in central Kingston, the new & unique yoga and holistic living centre, Shiva Health, has something rather special about it. Hard to describe in words, the centre has a ‘feel’ to it that I have never experienced anywhere else….
On entering the centre shoes are left at the door, ‘along with your worries’, and immediately a sense of calm will envelop you. This overwhelming state of relaxation will follow you round the centre, starting in the reception area. Here, you will find everything you need to know about what the centre can offer you: yoga courses and retreats, monthly health talks, workshops and treatments, Noni juice, Pukka herbal teas, books, cds….the list goes on and on.
Shiva Rooms is the inspiration of Abhijeeta, a Satyananda Yoga teacher and Thai Yoga Massage therapist. She has successfully created a relaxed, warm and welcoming space. I could go on about the three stunning treatment rooms and the two studios where Abhijeeta teaches all levels of yoga but I’d rather talk about the exciting ‘extras’ that I have yet to discover anywhere else…
….pregnancy & Active Birth yoga, pregnancy massage, baby massage courses and then kids yoga just to complete the cycle of development! Phew!
For a centre that does not necessarily specialise in pregnancy, babies and children, there is certainly an amazing range of classes, treatments and workshops available to balance, relax and recharge both body and mind for all ages. The therapists are clearly passionate about what they do as they bring awareness and holistic living to the whole community. Experience Thai yoga massage, deep tissue massage, aromatherapy, reflexology, Indian head massage, Reiki, hypnotherapy, life coaching, acupuncture and more!
During May alone Shiva Health is hosting two workshops: Exploring Surya Namaskara (Sat 5th) and Sing Out/Nada Yoga (Sat 12th). There are also free talks on the first Wednesday of each month (1.15-1.45pm); the May talk is an ‘Introduction to Limelight Essences’. Moreover, an Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT) course is focussing on our relationship with food (something I think we should all do!) I am astounded at what this small, well hidden centre has to offer…it is truly a very special find in Kingston!
If you are stuck on ideas for that well deserved break this year, Abhijeeta has organised a Yoga retreat to the stunning island of Lesbos, Greece. Indulge your spiritual, mental and physical being with a week of yoga, meditation, hot springs, breathtaking scenery…total relaxation. If this fabulous week in June is not possible, no need to panic because Abhijeeta has organised a second trip to the island of Samos for a similar experience later this year in September.
Shiva Health has so many things to offer it would be a shame to miss out on something so special…all I did was pop in for a cuppa and a look round and found myself at the start of a new journey of self love, self balance and self worth.'

'Open Days, held regularly at the yoga & holistic living centre are the perfect excuse for a little pampering and an opportunity to try something new - for free, writes Helen Husbands.
The holistic living centre in Kingston is a welcoming space with a relaxed and warm atmosphere in vibrant Old London Road. It is the inspiration of Abhijeeta, a Satyananda yoga teacher and Thai yoga massage therapist, who has brought together a team dedicated to holistic living.
At the latest open day, guests too part in hour-long Satyanana, Vinyasa and pregnancy yoga classes, completed a 'New Year, New You - Balance Your Life' workshop and heard about the benefits of Tahitian Noni Juice and hypnobirthing. Fifteen-minute taster treatments of Indian head massage, aromatherapy, reiki, reflexology and Thai yoga massage were also available.
I was treated to 15 minutes of reflexology, a pressure massage applied to the reflex points of the feet. It aims to restore and maintain balance of mind, spirit and body and also helps speed up the removal of toxins. A holistic neck and face massage, with aromatherapy oils blended specifically to my needs, ensured my tense muscles were loosened before I embarked on an hour of Satyananda Yoga.
The type of yoga uses postures to balance the body & mind, breathing practices to work on the energy of the body and meditation to calm and focus the mind. I left feeling invigorated, enlightened and thoroughly pampered!'
'I was treated to a one and a half hour traditional Thai yoga massage, an ancient healing art which has its roots in India but is widely used in Thailand and western countries today. It concentrates on an energy line system through which the body’s natural life force flows. Blockages in this life force may cause aches, pains and disease.
The massage is applied through the therapist’s use of hands,
feet and elbows to apply pressure to important points along the energy lines,
in combination with gentle stretching and applied Hatha yoga.
This releases blocked energy and frees the body’s own natural healing
potential, restoring balance, health and harmony.
The gentle stretching movements, energy line and pressure point work produces a uniquely relaxing yet energising and highly effective therapeutic treatment, ideal for anyone regardless of their level of flexibility.
I was left to relax after the treatment before being treated to a herbal detox tea before I left, feeling energised, calm and thoroughly relaxed.'
