Have you ever wondered what makes you react and feel in certain ways? Do you blame other people for the way they 'make you feel?'
People come into group therapy for a variety of reasons. Mostly to learn more about themselves and the way they function in life. It maybe for some people they have begun to notice an uncomfortable pattern of behaviour or feelings emerge in family or work relationships. They may want something to be different for them. People come because they find they constantly sabotage certain areas of their lives and this creates unhappiness and blame. It may be that they diet to lose weight but end up putting weight on again for emotional reasons and want to address it. People also come just because they want to work on developing their human potential. Whatever the reason, group therapy is a powerful and effective method of addressing the way you function in the world.
Tara, a qualified therapist, has over five years of running groups and training other facilitators, and is now opening one at Shiva Health on Tuesday evenings at seven. She explains that this is a great way of people getting to address some of the issues they may need support with but cannot afford one to one psychotherapy. Even when someone else is taking time in the group, everyone will experience feelings and reactions to what is being said, this tells them how they view the world as sparks off all sort of thoughts. It gives individuals a forum to explore these in a safe and supportive environment. It can also be challenging and requires a certain level of personal commitment from group members.
Each group member is individually assessed for suitability, prior to acceptance in a group. There is a maximum group size of nine members and it will run for one and a half hours. The cost is £20 per session or £15 per session when paid for in a twelve week block. This time has been chosen to allow working people to finish work and get there comfortably. Subject to interest a second group may run during the day.
