Through touch, a baby learns to experience pleasure, enhances non-verbal communication between mother and child and it is an invaluable way to give a baby a sense of well being and security |
Massage is a common sight in Eastern cultures. It is something practised by the whole family both for the mother during and after pregnancy and also for the baby. Babies are massaged daily by their grandmothers and then their mothers. Massage helps pretect babies' skin from the sun, and encourages them to relax and become more flexible.
Through touch, a baby learns to experience pleasure, enhances non-verbal communication between mother and child and it is an invaluable way to give a baby a sense of well being and security. Research has also shown that massage helps the body to release tension, which often arises from having to adapt to the world outside the womb.
Massage is also an effective way to calm an unsettled baby and techniques have been found extrememly beneficial in Special Care Units, Children's Hospitals and other Special Needs Clinics whilst others have been used to calm colic, diarrhoea, constipation, sleeplessness, and other bodily functions. The list of benefits of massage for the baby is endless but a select few are shown below!
It is important to recognise how important baby massage is for parents
too. Parents who regularly massage their baby have reported that massage:
- relaxes and calms both them and the baby
- enhances bonding and communication
- empowers them in responding to the baby's needs
- enhances pleasure and well being
- relaxes and releases anxiety...all great things!!
Next course starts (TBC): Tuesdays 10.30 - 11.30am (4 weeks - £52)

- enhancing bonding
- developing sound personality and inner strength
