Well summer is finally here and as usual it has really crept up on us (I think the cold and wet weather was a cunning decoy from Mother Nature!). But now is the time to put away those jumpers, pack up your thermal undies and dig out your sunglasses!

Have you ever noticed how your mood improves when the sun is shining? Being able to spend your days in flip flops, strappy tops and cool trousers is a fabulous feeling as you can absorb the warm and light of the sun from above, as well as feeling close and grounded under your feet from the earth below.

As usual Shiva Health has plenty to offer you over the summer months to celebrate this change in season. To kick off the summer here is everything we have for you in June (and a little snippet of what's to come in July!).

Everything from new yoga classes and Buddhist meditation to pregnancy packages and baby massage courses. Have a read about one of our new therapists Carol Ruddock (homeopath & cranio sacral therapist) and learn about our first Yoga Holiday of the year as experienced by Steph. Maybe she'll persuade you to book on our next trip later this year to the stunning Greek island, Samos!

Wishing you much love & infinite oms

Enjoy the summer!

Lesbos...there are no words...

It is rare for a holiday to exceed my expectations,  but this one short week managed just that...

An hours taxi ride from the airport

brought me to the
Milelja Centre situated just outside Molyvos with breathtaking views. It is unheard of for me to be stumped for words but this was definitely one of those moments that stopped me in mid sentence and captivated my gaze for what felt like an eternity.

This striking view of a hillside, topped with a castle that appeared to be hailed by the houses dotted below it, was the back drop to my stay. Milelja doesn't have a conventional swimming pool but instead boasts a fresh mineral pool both chlorine and salt free. When in the pool there is nothing between you and this extraordinary landscape. And the same is true when eating breakfast or, more importantly when practising yoga.

Abhijeeta taught two classes per day (my favourite was the morning class). At 7.30am there was a stillness that focuses the mind and settles the spirit. Admittedly a lot of the class is practised with the eyes shut but on those occasions when eyes were open in order to fix the gaze on a specific point there was no doubt where my eyes were drawn to.

After yoga the day was our own. Walks to Molyvos took only ten minutes; a very pretty town with many shops and quaint tavernas. The cobbled back streets took you all the way to the castle where the view invited a whole new perspective of the island.

In the opposite direction was Eftalou. A lovely hours walk (or a ten minute taxi ride!) that took me to yet another 'sanctuary': the hot springs. Stepping down into a humid cavernous room containing one large hot spring bath I immediately felt the incredible energy that had built over the years.

At 42 degrees there was no jumping in but instead very careful foot placement allowing very gradual submersion of eventually the whole body. At first I didn't think there was going to be any way I could get my whole body into water so hot but with patience it became easier and easier and before I knew it I was up to my neck and absolutely loving it!

Time in the hot springs was complemented by dips into the crystal clear sea just outside. After taking a few minutes to get into water that hot I was guessing it might take a few hours to get into water that was going to feel that cold! I surprised myself. The sea was cool and refreshing and with every submersion into the hot and the cold I actually felt as if on some level I was being healed. This experience was more profound to me than any other western medication I have had to date. I returned four times.

I am so grateful for my time in Lesbos. The week provided an opportunity for us all to nurture ourselves on all levels and gain a little perspective on how are lives are forming back in the UK.

I was not alone in being touched by Lesbos. I have no doubt that I will return with Abhijeeta year after year and I hope you will too.

If you don't want to wait another year, Abhijeeta is running another trip in September (20-27th), to Samos. Trust me...you don't want to miss it!

A conversation with Carol Ruddock ~ Homeopath/Cranio-sacral therapist

How did you first become interested in Homeopathy and Craniosacral therapy?

I was attracted to Homeopathy because Homeopathic remedies can be used to treat virtually anything so its potential for healing is huge.
My interest in Craniosacral Therapy developed several years after I had started practising as a Homeopath when I went to see a Craniosacral therapist for a painful knee. My knee was sorted in my first treatment session as well as my ear that had been irritating me for years which was cured at the same time!

Who did you train with and how long have you been practising for?

I started to train as a Homeopath in 1989, studying first at the School of Homeopathy in Regents Park and subsequently at Purton House School of Homeopathy. I qualified in 1994. I added the Craniosacral Therapy to my skills in 2006 after an intensive course at the School of Craniosacral Therapy.

What are the benefits of having Homeopathy and Craniosacral therapy?

Both therapies get to the centre of where and why the symptoms are arising. With Homeopathy you are working with what your clients tell you about themselves and their symptoms. After taking remedies clients often feel immediate relief from symptoms, sometimes the remedy has to be left to work for a little longer.

During Craniosacral Therapy the therapist receives information directly from the body by contacting the craniosacral rhythm. Therapists are able to release tensions, facilitate realignments and redirect energy which enables the body to adjust back to its healthy state. Typically clients report feeling pleasantly relaxed and refreshed and aches and pains are often relieved immediately.

What have been your most prominent experiences as a practitioner?

In my Homeopathic treatments I treated a boy who had been suffering with asthma ever since his mother stopped breastfeeding him. One single dose of the boy's homeopathic remedy immediately improved his health spectacularly and his parents were delighted.

In my Craniosacral practice I clearly recall a man who was waiting for an operation on his shoulder as a result of injuries sustained from falling off his motorbike. After minutes of Craniosacral treatment I felt something move in his shoulder. That night he slept properly and without pain. The next day he promptly cancelled the operation and has had no further shoulder problems.

What would you like to achieve, as a practitioner, in the future?

I just want to bring the possibilities of Homeopathy and Craniosacral Therapy to as many people as possible so they can experience the benefits first hand. Even if someone is not "ill" both therapies can provide the foundations for long term good health. It would be wonderful to spread that around!
